Jupiter Moves From Scorpio and enters Sagittarius on 22 Nov 2007 at 05.03 AM(IST) and remains there till 09 dec 2008 10:57 PM (IST), Jupiter will be in retrograde motion from 8th May 2008 to 10th Sep 2008.
Jupiter in Sanskrit is known as Brihaspathi or Guru or Deva Guru meaning "teacher, lord of light, and teacher to the gods" In the Taittirya Upanishad Jupiter is said to be the wisdom and Speech of the Cosmic form (Virat Purusha). In Brihat Parasara Hora(1.26.31) he is said to be the 5th Avathar of Visnu (Vamana Avathar). In the Visnu purana he is identified as Ganapathi and Angiris (the priest of the gods and lord of sacrifices). In the Rigveda Brihaspati is said to be born in the sky with seven faces seven rays. No ritual sacrifice is complete without invoking the guru the teacher of the Gods. He is the seer who perceived and wrote one of the hymns of the Rig Veda (10.72). In the Skanda Purana it is said that Brihaspati Worshiped Lord Shiva For a thousand years and as reward Shiva made him as one of the nine planets.
In the Rig Veda, Jupiter has eleven hymns and is addressed one hundred and seventy times. He is described as pure with a beautiful form with a ruddy appearance, having a clear voice, seven mouths, a lovely tongue, sharp horns, a hundred wings and holding a iron axe. He considered the most compassionate of the planets. He is also the bestower of wisdom.
In the Rig Veda the names Brihaspati and Brahmanaspati alternate, and are equivalent to each other. They are names "of a deity in whom the action of the worshipper upon the gods is personified. He is the suppliant, the sacrificer, the priest, who intercedes with gods on behalf of men and protects mankind against the wicked. Hence he appears as the prototype of the priests and priestly order; and is also designated as the Purohita (family priest) of the divine community. He is called in one place `the father of the gods,' and a widely extended creative power is ascribed to him. He is also designated as `the shining' and `the gold-colored,' and as `having the thunder for his voice."
In later times he is a Rishi. He is also regent of the planet Jupiter, and the name is commonly used for the planet itself. In this character his car is called Nitighosha and is drawn by the patronymic Angirasa. As preceptor of the gods he is called Animishacharya, Chakshas, Ijya, and Indrejya. There is an extraordinary story in the Matsya and Bhagavata Purana of the Rishis having milked the earth through Brihaspati. Brihaspati was father of Bharadwaja by Mamata, wife of Utathya. . An ancient code of law bears the name of Brihaspati, and he is also represented as being the Vyasa of the "fourth, Dwapara age." There was a Rishi of the name in the second Manwantara, and one who was founder of an heretical sect. Other epithets of Brihaspati are Jiva, `the living,' Didivis, `the bright,' Dhishana, `the intelligent,' and, for his eloquence, Gishpati, `lord of speech
According to Sri Aurobindo, The Brahmanaspati and Brihaspati of the Vedas and Brahma of the Hindu Trinity are to be one and the same God.
In the puranas Brihaspati is the son of rishi Angirasa and Surupa according to the Shiva Purana. He has two brothers named Utathya and Samvartana. He has three wives. His first wife Shuba gave birth to Bhanumati, Raaka, Archishmati, Mahamati, Mahishmati, Sinivalli, and Havishmati, his seven daughters. His second wife Tara gives birth to seven sons and a daughter. Through his third wife Mamata, he has two sons, Kacha and Bharadwaja.
He attained his position as the preceptor of the Devas, by performing penances on the banks of Prabhas Tirtha. Lord Shiva granted him this position, as well as his position as one of the Navagrahas (nine planets).
In Babylon he was the great God Marduk or Merodach, in Egypt he was Amon, Mizraim ,Osiris ,in Rome he was Jove the supreme deity of the nation, to the greeks he was known as Zeus, the father of the Gods, the Norse called him by the name Thor.
